Neurologic Music Therapy®
"Looking at progress in neuro-rehab over the last two decades, we have undoubtedly learned a lot…a good example is… the development of new training techniques...”
- Volker Hömberg, President of the World Federation for Neurorehabilitation, 2025
WHAT IS NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY®?
Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) is a standardised and evidenced-based clinical treatment of 20 techniques (Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®, 2025). These techniques utilise music for the purposes of training or retraining brain and behaviour functions in the domains of speech & language, cognition, motor skills, and psychosocial function.
WHO CAN BENEFIT?
NMT™ is an appropriate treatment intervention to support children and adults with a wide range of diagnoses including brain injury, developmental disorders, neurological disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions.
HOW CAN IT HELP?
NMT™ techniques address a broad range of functional and psychological goals. Treatment goals can be broadly organised into 3 categories: developmental, rehabilitative, or adaptive. An NMT™ therapist is therefore either supporting the development of function for the first time, rehabilitating function, or helping to maintain function for as long as possible.
WHEN SHOULD I MAKE A REFERRAL?
The brain is most adaptable during early recovery or development, making a timely Neurologic Music Therapy® intervention invaluable for individuals with neurological conditions. In medicolegal cases, case managers are instrumental in ensuring swift access to therapy for clients with speech, movement, cognitive, or emotional difficulties. To maximise outcomes, professionals and families should prioritise early NMT™ referrals, ideally within weeks of diagnosis or upon recognising developmental delays. For progressive conditions, early therapy can help slow deterioration and preserve function.
The Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®
In the UK, the designation of Neurologic Music Therapy® Music Therapist is only achieved after successful completion of the NMT™ Institute Training by an HCPC-registered Music Therapist who has previously completed a Master’s degree in Music Therapy. Affiliates of the NMT Academy™ must uphold the professional affiliation license requirements set out by the NMT Academy™. Affiliates are then able to maintain their designation by logging the relevant professional development requirements each year.
